The Queens of Hip-Hop Playlist, Part 1

Taking it back to 1980 wth Funky 4+1, the first rap crew to feature a female MC, the legendary Sha-Rock. They were also the first rap group to appear on a national television show, in a groundbreaking Valentine’s Day performance on Saturday Night Live, hosted by occasional rapper, Deborah Harry. Sha-Rock paved the way for female MC’s like Roxanne Shante (known to be a beast in rap battles), MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Salt-n-Pepa (featuring a “girl DJ, Spinderella) to be put on in the male-dominated hip-hop industry and prove that they could ‘spit bars’ that were jus as dope as any male rapper’s.

Monie Love and Queen Latifah said it best:

“Some think that we can’t flow,

Stereotypes, they got to go,

I’ma mess around and flip the scene into reverse

With what?

With a little touch of ladies first.

Ladies First.”
